Whilst I’m on a roll with Biblical stories I have another one for you.
Last week I spoke about truly trusting the Divine.
This week I’d like to explore trusting the True Divine.
I have been reminded of the story I told decades ago about Abraham being told by ‘God’ to take his son, his only son, Isaac, up to a mountaintop and sacrifice him.
The Jewish book of Genesis says; “Take thy only son, whom thou lovest ……and offer him as a burnt sacrifice”.
So Abraham took the boy away from the family and they travelled for three days to the specific place “God” had proposed.
They took with them both fire and wood for the sacrifice as well as a knife.
Together, alone, they climbed the mountain.
The boy was confused and asked where the sacrificial lamb was for the burnt offering……
They built an altar, laid the wood and then – the Bible relates –
Abraham bound his own “son and laid him on the altar on the wood”.
He then ‘stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son”……
Well, the story has a kind of happy ending because an angel told
Abraham he could stop now – and he was shown a ram, caught by its horns in a thicket, which he was able to sacrifice instead.
It is certainly not my place to consider the boy’s mental state after his father’s attempted filicide (killing of a child); or the father’s pathological disorder that caused such trauma (or the wider family’s inability to responsibly stop it happening in the first place).
My focus is firmly fixed on the importance of discernment.
Discernment when it comes to what is truly guidance from the Divine.
In today’s world we experience and witness atrocities across the world which are underpinned by prayers, priests, blessings, benedictions and pleas for God to divinely support the supplicants in their quest for victory over their opponents.
Thanks are offered to ‘God’ when a victory is achieved, regardless of the loss of innocent life, limb, land and livelihoods of the vanquished.
In all wars the weak are trampled underfoot – physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, socially and societally.
This is never God-directed.
God wishes for every part of humanity to respect, appreciate and embrace every other part.
For care and compassion to be expressed by everyone toward everyone else.
Many years ago, a church Minister in the US wished to join our interfaith community as a Spiritual Guide.
He flew to Australia and talked to Trudi and I about moving to Queensland.
To emphasise the importance of his position within his own church he excitedly told us how he had been given the great honour to be the church leader who blessed the nuclear warheads aboard US naval ships moored at
San Diego Naval Base prior to their departure to the war zone.
We suggested he wasn’t a good “fit” for us…..
He was shocked and assured us he was a “man of God”…..
Like Abraham, it can be hard to recognise the false from the genuine.
The “god” of our ego from the God of our True Being.
Yet, in life, this is our only purpose: to be a true son or daughter of the
True Divine.
It’s not rocket science.
But it is the True science of Life!
It’s the one thing you can trust!
